Pence, Command Sergeant Major U.S. Army (Ret.), was the vice president of the board of directors for Horses and Humans Research Foundation, where he helped address using alternative treatments with the growing issue of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.

CSM Pence was the co-founder of The Caisson Platoon Equine Assisted Program in coordination with The Walter Reed National Military medical Center and the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. This program led to collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl. There are now more than 300 PATH Intl. Member Centers across the nation serving veterans.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, U.S. Army Drill Sergeant School, Infantry Operations and Intelligence School and the Norwegian Winter Operations School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served in a variety of assignments, including service in the Republic of Vietnam as a small unit leader, drill sergeant in a basic training company, battalion operations sergeant, battalion intelligence sergeant, squad leader and platoon sergeant. He retired in 1997. From 1997 thru 2013 he was a project manager for CACI International.
