New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding

NMTRCWatermelon Mountain Pony Club (WMPC) is one of the four Pony Clubs in New Mexico and founded in the 1980s by a group of local parents who wanted their children to be exposed to the fun and the values of Pony Club. The annual Watermelon Mountain Pony Club Horse Trials is their most significant fundraiser, a wonderful opportunity to support the local Pony Club youth, and recognize the children who have developed responsibility, moral judgment, leadership, and self-confidence.

For the last 4 years, WMPC has invited NMCTR to bring riders and compete in the Horse Trials. May 4th 2019four of NMCTR riders participated in the WMPC Horse Trials at Expo New Mexico. Our riders rode a dressage test in the indoor arena, displaying confidence, independence and horsemanship skills that they have been working on all year!  It was amazing to see the NMCTR riders put their disabilities behind them and truly allow their abilities to shine! Well done riders!

On June 6th, 2019, Dr. Temple Grandin visited NMCTR during a therapeutic riding lesson in the indoor arena at Hipico Santa Fe. The therapeutic riding lesson started with warmups and explanation of the lessons objectives. Dr. Grandin sat on the bleachers with all of NMCTR’s friends and family, answering questions and even inquired about letting the riders in the lesson be more independent. Dr. Grandin continued to express her view that the society needs to “stretch our children”, let them learn and stop sheltering them. After the lesson was completed, Dr. Grandin offered to have a Q&A. There were many good questions and Dr. Grandin continued to express her view that all children need to opportunity to get outside, use their hands, find their desired skilled trait. She encourages the society to get wood shop, art, and such classes back into the schools. How? Dr. Grandin suggested to start with one school at a time and when you succeed, write about it. The entire community needs to know about the benefits of children learning and pursing skilled traits. After the Q&A, Dr. Grandin signed books and took time for pictures.

NMCTR sends a special thank you to Dr. Temple Grandin for taking time out her day to visit the therapeutic riding center, encouraging our riders to succeed, and answers questions from our friends and family. NMCTR would also like to thank the Friends of the Santa Fe Library for hosting Dr. Temple Grandin and arranging her visit to NMCTR.

Agape Acres

We have a couple of great things going on here at Agape Acres in Marana, Arizona. We just had a volunteer project day last Saturday where we started the build of our ramp and completed painting letters for use in the arena for EAL, cleaning tack and some other projects at our center.  We will be able to finish our ramp next weekend and then will be implementing our veterans program.

Also we had our second annual fundraiser in March and it was a big success we raised over $7000 which is a big deal for our little center.

We have a new logo and one of our therapy horses turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to a precious filly June 8th- we welcomed Little Bit Of Spice! Surprise!

AshleyNew Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding, Santa Fe, NM
Ashley Armijo attended the University of New Mexico, pursuing a career in Speech Language Pathology. She has worked in the developmentally disabled community for 8 years. She was a former member of the United States Pony Club and has ridden horses for over 25 years. When she is not working, she spends her time competing at 3-day eventing horse shows with her horse show horses. Her desire to help others and her love for horses led her to seek her PATH International Instructor Certification. She joined the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding's team in 2013.

NMCTR's Therapy Horse Won Thoroughbred of The Year
NMCTR Flash HorseThe New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding's therapy Horse "Fly" won the T.I.P Thoroughbred of the Year Award. The Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) Thoroughbred of the Year Award recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine-assisted therapy or police work. The award include a $5,000 grant to the non-profit organization associated with the horse or, if not associated with a non-profit organization, to a horse-related charity chosen by The Jockey Club. "Fly" is a 20-year old thoroughbred that raced on the track for 7 years before becoming a show horse. After recovering a broken leg, "Fly" began a new career in therapeutic riding. Fly's warm heart and will to want to change lives makes him a popular and adored horse. He knows when to comfort with the touch of his nose. He senses a rider's instability or fear, and moves gently and carefully, knowing it is not a time he should race ahead or leap high. He patiently allows a rider with Parkinson's disease, because of shaking hands and restless legs, to repeatedly joggle the reins and kick him. Racing for 7 years, competing in the show ring, overcoming a broken leg, and now giving back to the community... he is a special horse.

NMCTR Received a $10,000 Grant from The Onota Foundation
The New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding received a $10,000 grant from Onota Foundation. The Onota Foundation believes that the most pressing need for humanity today is to rediscover its place in nature and to live in balance with its natural surroundings. The grant monies will be used for the horse care expenses of the NMCTR herd and to enhance the volunteer outreach.

The Ups and the Downs: The Effects of Stimulants/Depressants, Mood Stabilizers, and Antidepressants
January 24, 2019, 6-7:30 p.m.
Horses Help, Phoenix, AZ, Midwestern University H.O.M.E. Projects
Are you a parent or caretaker of someone with behavioral or processing difficulties that requires taking daily medications? Maybe you simply interact with individuals taking mood altering prescription medications on a regular basis? During our presentation, we will be taking a look into how some common behavior/mood altering drugs may affect young children and adults. We’ll touch upon a few different drugs from each class and how they not only affect the body, but also how they can affect behavior. Together, we hope to open up an interactive discussion and answer questions that others might have not only on how some of these commonly prescribed medications work, but on how you may observe the effects and manifestations of taking them.

Family H.E.R.D. Research Project
Horses Help is halfway through a research project that started in September. The purpose of the study is to determine whether or not an equine assisted activity program, such as the Family H.E.R.D., has a positive impact on family function. We are still recruiting families for this project. A total of ten families have participated. There are currently six spots open that are needed for data collection. Participation is free to families who meet the criteria.Any family interested in participating in the research study will need to be able to commit to three consecutive weeks. The program is offered on Monday evenings, Friday evenings, Saturday mornings or Saturday afternoons, and at least one child in the family must be age 10 or older. The research program is set up in three phases. Each week the family completes one of the phases. All activities and challenges are centered on learning about interacting with horses as family members will have multiple opportunities to work closely with the horses. Each phase teaches something new and interactive about horses in a groundwork setting.

Phase one focuses on three concepts: building a rapport and caring for horses, seeing the world from a horse’s perspective and learning about equine communication. Families are engaged in game-like activities and challenges in which they will experience the three concepts. Phase two focuses on understanding and accepting differences by learning about herd dynamics. Families will learn the importance for animals of prey to work together and accept the differences in hierarchy and personality within the herd and how it can relate to family dynamics. Finally, in phase three, families will learn to establish and maintain boundaries while working with horses on and off lead. Concepts learned from phases one and two will also be revisited in phase three to help with the success of leading.

Data collection includes filling out questionnaires prior to starting the program, after the completion of the three weeks and again after three months. All names and identities are withheld for confidentiality. The H.E.R.D. program is not a family therapy program, but an opportunity for families to enjoy being outdoors together while learning about horses and interactions.

All families are welcome to participate as long as they meet the following criteria:
• At least one family member is an adult 18 years or older
• At least one child in the family is 10 years old or older (mini mum age of 7)
• Everyone in the family is able to read, write and speak English
• Everyone in the family is capable of giving consent to participate in the study
• Family can provide their own transportation to and from Horses Help

Family will be able to participate in all three weeks of the Family HERD program

Kristen ChapsNew Wyoming State Chair
Kristen Marcus is a native Wyoming girl who grew up on a ranch raising cows, horses and pigs. She has been horse-crazy her whole life and wanted to pursue a career in equine veterinary medicine until life took an unexpected turn. Kristen's first child was born with cerebral palsy. Kristen chose to stay at home with her daughter while going to school 3/4 time to obtain a Master's Degree in Agricultural Communications at Oklahoma State University. Her master's thesis was a case study involving a young girl with severe anxiety and a therapy horse named Spud. This study spurred Kristen to get involved with a center and begin teaching her young daughter horsemanship. Several moves later, Kristen and her family returned to Wyoming where she is now the Executive Director for Children, Horses and Adults in PartnerShip (CHAPS) Equine Assisted Therapy in Sheridan, WY. woman with two horses

CHAPSCHAPS Equine Assisted Therapy
CHAPS expanded the EAL programs this year to serve Pre-K children at the Child Development Center and Seniors at Daybreak, a local senior day program. These groups are in addition to serving veterans at the Veterans' Home of Wyoming. Our ponies travel to the facilities once a week to provide a fun learning experience for everyone. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly good and we are excited to see our new clients each week. CHAPS has no heat in our facility so we are shut down from November to March. This program fits neatly into our schedule and allows us to serve more of our community.

Loving Thunder completed at 12 week riding program over the summer for children in the foster system of New Mexico. Grant funding was procured and provided no cost riding to 12 families. The children ranged in age from 5 to 15. They started their program with learning ground handling skills, bareback riding, and ended with saddle riding and a horse show to exhibit their skills. They completed a drill team pattern including lots of reining, trotting and pattern memorization. One parent was quoted “This program is an experience that all foster children should experience. The horses made them excited each week, they looked forward to grooming (being responsible), and giving respect to the horses and each other, lastly it improved their confidence beyond belief.”

Loving Thunder featured their 2017 Gypsy Gift Horse at the NM State Fair this year. She paraded up and down main street meet fairgoers up close and personal. “Poetry of Lexlin” has had a busy year including, visits to senior centers, the NM Railyard Market, Ballooning for Downs Syndrome, Walk for Autism, walked through our brand new Big R Store and shopped for her own brush. Do you use adopted horses in your program? We want to hear about it! The Right Horse Initiative is working to improve the lives of horses in transition by changing the conversation around equine welfare and massively increasing adoption. Adoptable horses are often healthy, good minded and athletic horses who have found themselves in transition through no fault of their own. Hoof Falls & Footfalls Goes International!
By Saebra Pipoly
South Korea Workshop ParticipantsI had the immense honor of traveling to South Korea to work with the Korea Racing Authority (KRA) in August. KRA has a branch of their business that offers therapeutic riding and they were recently contacted by local officials to launch a new pilot program to serve the Korean Firefighters.

During my two weeks in South Korea, I taught a basic and intensive workshop at the Let's Run Park Seoul to therapeutic riding instructors and other equine professionals that came from all over South Korea. The workshop focused on building, teaching, and sustaining an equine program for Firefighters, specifically those who may be exhibiting symptoms of PTSD, acute stress disorder anxiety, stress, and physical ailments due to the unique factors of their job.

This workshop hit very close to home in several different ways. First, after a lifetime with horses I know (and you all know) firsthand how lives can be changed through interacting with horses and I was so excited to share information and techniques with instructors on the other side of the world. Second, I am a police wife (yes...different from firefighters but our families experience a lot of the same things). Seeing the impact that the job and shift work have on first responders is not just something I know about, it is a firsthand reality. Addressing mental health, building resiliency, and keeping our first responders and military personnel not only physically safe but mentally safe should be utmost priority no matter what country they live in.

The equine program for firefighters starts in mid September at various therapeutic riding centers across South Korea. Keep our South Korean instructors (most certified as Registered or Advanced TRI through PATH Intl.) in your thoughts and prayers as they embark on this exciting new journey! I have no doubt they will provide a safe, quality equine program to the Firefighters. I am looking forward to hearing updates (and will share them with you all) about all the amazing things done and lives impacted by our fellow instructors and four footed colleagues in South Korea!

Task Analysis: If you are an instructor you have probably heard this term. Task analysis is a key block of the foundation that makes up a solid instructors. A lot of people know 'what' task analysis is...but actually implementing it and the 'how' of task analysis can sometimes seem llusive. Read the blog post here.

This fall, Horses Help will be conducting its first research project with ASU doctoral student and Horses Help volunteer, Allison Solarz. Allison is pursuing her Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner (DNP) in Mental Health degree. For her research project, she will be measuring the effects of Equine Assisted Activities on family function using our Family H.E.R. D. program. H.E.R.D. is an acronym for Honor. Emotion. Respect. Devotion. The family program is designed for all members to experience activities and challenges together while learning about horses. Families will learn about equine communication, care and handling in groundwork activities and challenges such as grooming and leading. It gives an opportunity to learn about the individual person as well as how the family functions together as a whole. The Family H.E.R.D. program is not a therapy program, but rather an opportunity to experience horses and barn-style learning together.

We offer two 3-day camps in order to accommodate this many kids, and we are currently creating a grief camp tailored toward adults.

Our mental health programs continue to grow with increasing collaborations with a local counseling center as well as the Department of Family Services. We currently offer programs for individuals and groups of adolescents to improve communication skills, problem solving, and team work while working with the horses. The counseling center has requested additional programs for their elementary school aged clients and for clients with chronic mental illness who live in group homes.

High Hopes Therapeutic Riding in Old Lyme, CT is pleased to announce that Chelsea Bourn will be joining the team as Program Director.

Chelsea moves to High Hopes from the Glenholme School in Washington, CT where, as Transition Program Director, she was responsible for the development and implementation of life-skills curriculum to young adults aged 18-22, with cognitive and emotional disabilities. Amongst many other achievements she established an Equine Assisted Therapy Program at Glenholme.

In many ways, Chelsea is ‘returning home.’ From the age of 15, Chelsea was an “avid” volunteer in the High Hopes’ programs, living as she did at that time in Essex. “Although I began volunteering ‘selfishly’ for more time with the horses,” reflects Chelsea, “the time [I spent at High Hopes] eventually guided my professional ambitions.” During her undergraduate career, she completed two internships at High Hopes, one in Occupational Therapy and the other with Special Programs. “I am so happy to be joining the High Hopes’ team … I often joked that I wanted to ‘run summer camp year-round’ and so, experiential learning for people with disabilities became by primary career ambition.”

“We are delighted to welcome Chelsea back in this key position,” said Kitty Stalsburg, Executive Director. “Megan Ellis, our Program Director for the last three years is a hard act to follow, but we have no doubt that Chelsea will continue to build on all that Megan has achieved, as well as utilizing her extensive research career to keep High Hopes’ Programs at the leading edge of Therapeutic Horsemanship in the U.S. and beyond. She brings many strengths in applied behavior analysis, professional development for educators, individual education plans, scheduling, and developing vocational opportunities for students.”

Chelsea holds a Master of Arts in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Connecticut and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Special Education from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. Since 2014, she has taught part-time as an Adjunct Instructor of General Psychology, Lifespan Development, and Child Development at Tunxis Community College.
