A Message From PATH Intl. CEO

Kathy Alm
PATH Intl. CEO

As 2014 nears an end, I find myself reflecting on all that has been accomplished by and for the more than 58,000 participants served by PATH Intl. Members and all that has been accomplished within the EAAT field. Participants have taken their first step, spoken their first word, healed old wounds, re-directed their lives on a more positive path, trotted for the first time, gained leadership skills -- the list goes on and on.

Within the field, recognition of the value of this work has increased, research is happening, progress in credentialing and quality assurance has been made and a movement to bring together the various parts of our industry for the greater good has begun. If you are reading this message, you had some part in making that happen. Thank you.

As I look to 2015, I know there is much more work to be done: more participant progress to facilitate, more research, more alignment, more credentialing and quality assurance work, to name a few. I look forward to working together to make 2015 the year of progress.

Happy Holidays, everyone.

New PATH Intl. Grievance Filing Process

The PATH Intl. Quality Assurance Task Force was assembled to address professional ethics, professional discipline, conflicts of interest, grievances and appeals to determine and implement best practices in testing and training in association governance and in the stewardship of our members. The task force announces a new grievance filing process.

The policy states PATH Intl. Members will be subject to a fair and reasonable disciplinary and expulsion procedure to be carried out in good faith, effective January 1, 2015.

To learn about the PATH Intl. Grievance Review Panel, who may file a grievance, how to file a grievance and how the process will work, click here for more information. Questions should be directed to Sam Albrecht, PATH Intl. Director of Programs and membership.

PATH Intl. Strategic Plan Updates

When the current PATH Intl. strategic plan was rolled out in the fall of 2014, the PATH Intl. Board of Trustees and Staff became energized to begin implementing the plan that was created from association member, stakeholder, board and staff feedback. As a result, the staff and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and dived right in to accomplish the goals set forth. A year into the three-to-five-year plan, the association is pleased to communicate that many tasks have been completed, and even more are well in the works.

One important update we'd like to highlight is the language used for the goals and objectives was revisited by the board and staff and modified slightly to include clearer, measurable purpose for each. There was no change to any of the original intent; however, the improved content is more concise and better defined. To view the new language, download the updated PATH Intl. Strategic Plan.

Center Membership Renewals

Thank you for your commitment to safety, ethical practices and professionalism in equine-assisted activities and therapies. To ensure that PATH Intl. continues to provide your center with premium education and to maintain uninterrupted access to the wealth of benefits available to PATH Intl. centers, please renew your center membership by December 31.

Online center renewal for 2015 is now available. Online registration makes it especially easy to renew your registration before it expires. With the elimination of paper, you'll end any worry about losing your form on the desk or in the mail.

Click here to renew online. NOTE: The center's primary contact or executive director must be logged in to their personal account in order to renew online.

If you need to update the primary contact for your center, please send in a center change notification form or a premier accredited center change notification form.

Of course, if you prefer to send in a hard copy renewal, that is still an option. Download and complete the center renewal booklet and renewal invoice, and mail it in.

Equine Tips

Engaging in Play
By Cathy Languerand, Chairperson, PATH Intl. Equine Welfare Committee
As winter closes in here in New England, without an indoor arena, mounted therapeutic lessons come to a halt. As boredom sets in, some EAAT center horses may show changes in their behavior. Days are short, wind chills are bitter and frozen ground slippery. Daily turnout and grooming may not meet all of your horses' needs. Horses become spooky, explosive and reactive. They may guard the gate, turn their hind end toward you, or pin their ears and threaten to bite. Our goal is to engage the horse's mind in play before the behaviors escalate. Let's look at what your horse might consider "play." Read more ...

The PATH Intl. Equine Welfare Committee is making a commitment to refine and deepen our perspective of equine well-being to include the physical, mental and emotional well-being of our wonderful four-legged partners. I invite you to join us on this journey. Please add your thoughts on PATH Intl. Community Connections page. It is my desire that these tips start a further discussion on Community Connections. Any thoughts? We appreciate hearing from you!
