Fun
Things to Do in San Diego!
You don't have to
spend a lot of money to have fun in San Diego. Sandiego.org lists
25 free (or relatively inexpensive) things to do. Here are a few
highlights:
La Jolla - The La
Jolla coastline varies dramatically - from 300 foot sea cliffs, to
rocky reefs, to golden sand coves, all for you to explore, including
miles of protected underwater preserves. La Jolla Cove is also perfect
for snorkeling or scuba diving, if you are so inclined.
Do you prefer desert vistas? Visit the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
and experience the natural beauty of the desert. The 600,000-acre park
is one of the largest state parks in the United States.
Enjoy free organ concerts at 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Spreckels Organ Pavillion
in Balboa Park. The Organ Pavillion features one of world's largest
outdoor pipe organs, a San Diego landmark since 1914, where organists
play traditional favorites, waltzes and show tunes on enormous 32-foot
pipes.

Garnering funds is
always a priority for our nonprofit PATH Intl. Member Centers. Nancy
Paschall will help you understand the messaging differences among the
various types of fundraising in The
Essentials of Grant Writing for EAAT Programs and how
to increase the likelihood of winning grants. Dana Butler-Moburg will
help you assess your organizations readiness for a capital campaign in When to Build? An Interactive
Conversation About Capital Campaigns and Building Fundraising Capacity
to Sustain Beyond the Build.

"Riding
My Way Back" Documentary Available to PATH Intl. Member Centers;
Also to Screen at Conference
|

 We at PATH Intl. know that
therapeutic horsemanship has helped thousands of our military personnel
heal from the visible and invisible wounds of war. The documentary
"Riding My way Back" tells the story of one USAF vet, Staff
Sgt. Aaron Heliker, and Fred, the horse who helped him heal.
Filmmaker Robin Fryday and Purposeful Productions, Inc., a new PATH
Intl. Corporate Member, are making the film available free of charge to
PATH Intl. Member Centers, who can then screen it in their communities
for free or as a fundraiser. The short documentary will also be
screened at the PATH Intl. Conference with time for discussion with
Aaron and with Mindy Fisher and Debbi Fisher, two PATH Intl. Certified
Registered Instructors with Rainier Therapeutic Riding, a PATH Intl.
Premier Accredited Center in Yelm, WA, where the documentary was

Certified
Instructors: Help Us Validate an Industry Orientation Pre-Test Through
CourseWebs
|
|
|
The PATH Intl.
Certification Review and Development Task Force has created an instrument
to assist those interested in entering the equine-assisted activities and
therapies (EAAT) field and who may be interested in pursuing PATH Intl.
certifications. The task force has created an Industry Orientation
comprised of three pre-tests and one survey. Its purpose is to assist the
instructor candidate in determining if pursuing a PATH Intl. instructor
certification is right for them and to decrease the dropout rate of those
who enter the certification process.
There are four sections with questions covering equine, human and
business knowledge, and a motivational role fit survey of characteristics
common to those successful in the EAAT field. The value is that both the
candidate and PATH Intl. will know from the beginning of the
certification process where the strengths and areas needing development
reside.
The Industry Orientation pre-tests and self-assessment are now at the
stage of development where the library of test questions needs to be
validated by a control group. You
as a PATH Intl. Certified Instructor are our control group.
We will statistically validate that the assessment is asking the right
questions in the right way. As you have competently demonstrated the
knowledge, skills and motivations of a proficient certified instructor,
you are requested to validate the exam and survey questions. There are
168 knowledge and survey questions in this test question library. When
complete, the exam will be created by a rotating selection of the
validated questions from the test question library.
If you haven't
already, you will receive an email from CourseWebs with the subject line:
Registration for your PATH Intl. online course(s) Industry Orientation.
The email from CourseWebs will contain instructions for taking the online
course Industry Orientation.
Please take the time to help PATH Intl. build this new Industry
Orientation and survey for potential instructor candidates by completing
the Industry Orientation exams and survey for potential instructor
candidates. The more certified instructors we have participating at this
stage will help in ensuring a quality and useful tool for future PATH
Intl. Certified Professionals. The validation test will be open through
October 10.
You will receive
two CEUs for completing this survey. Additionally, to
thank you for your time, two names will be drawn from those who have
completed the test to receive $50 PATHBucks. (PATHBucks are like
receiving a gift certificate that can be applied to your association
purchases, memberships or applications.)

With Your Horse

As PATH Intl. Members, we agree and understand that our work with our
EAAT horses is a partnership. We do not USE horses in our programs. We
acknowledge that horses have feelings and are able to communicate how
they feel in their own language. Our challenge is to learn to read this
unique language. As we learn to recognize their language, a two-way
"conversation" becomes possible.
Two-way, trust-based communication is one method of creating a
horse-human partnership. Let's look at what two-way, trust-based

In
Celebration of National Philanthropy Day
|
|
|
Who is your
philanthropic idol? Why do you give to PATH Intl. or your center? In
celebration of National Philanthropy Day, the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP) is asking for a video answer. Submit a one-minute
video to help spread the word on therapeutic horsemanship!
Submissions are already underway, and the deadline is October 7. On
October 10, AFP will display all the videos they've received and open up
the voting. On National Philanthropy Day®, November 15, they will
announce the top five videos!
It's easy to get involved:
* Submit a video of yourself
* Ask your donors, volunteers and staff to submit videos of themselves
* Talk about National Philanthropy Day on Facebook and tweet
using #npdidol (about your videos) and #npdlove (for National
Philanthropy Day in general).
You can even use the contest to help promote your own organization as
well, creating a series of videos from supporters about what inspires
them to give.

Donations
Needed to Rename Award After Paul Spiers
|
|
 Dr. Paul Spiers, who served
as PATH Intl. Board of Trustees President from 2006 to 2008, was an
accomplished rider and a polo enthusiast. After an injury in 1994 while
on a hunt, Paul used a wheelchair and rehabilitated in part at Windrush
Farm Therapeutic Equitation, Inc., a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center
in North Andover, MA.
Paul, who passed away
September 2013, had a great passion for PATH Intl. and championed its
programs and initiatives in helping individuals to overcome challenges
and gain independence. To honor Paul Spier's passion for therapeutic
horsemanship, his friends are working to name the PATH Intl. Independent
Adult Equestrian of the Year Award in his name in perpetuity. To date,
$4,945 has been raised, and we need $5,000 by today, September 16, to
name the award (only $55 to go!). Please join us and donate
today!
