Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International

March 6, 2012

Thank You for Your Gifts to PATH Intl.

Thanks to our 2011 Year End Campaign donors, we not only met our goal but exceeded it! We appreciate all our veteran donors as well as the numerous new donor names and faces this year.

Many of you give to PATH Intl. each year so that YOUR professional association can provide the expertise, education and standards required to guide instructors, other professionals and centers in the provision of safe and meaningful equine-assisted activities and therapies. Your donations have given us the support to initiate a webinar training program so that we can provide the most up-to-date training in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

In addition, donations to the Pat and Jackie Mullins Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to the PATH Intl. Conference and Annual Meeting. As one 2011 conference attendee shared, "Horses and therapeutic riding have made such a difference in my life and taught me so much about patience and problem solving. Horses helped me so much during my adolescence and I hope to be able to use this opportunity to increase my knowledge and share it with my students."

Thank you for giving to PATH Intl.

Federation of Horses in Education and Therapy International (HETI) Name Change Official

It's official. The Federation of Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI) is now the Federation of Horses in Education and Therapy International (HETI). "With this name we give credit to where it is due: the horse," said Executive Director Gisela Heimsath-Rhodes. "Equines deliver those special ingredients, the movement, the special emotional connection, and the non-judgmental disposition that make our work so effective." Heimsath-Rhodes is also a PATH Intl. Certified Instructor, a PATH Intl. Certified Vaulting Instructor, has served on the PATH Intl. Vaulting Committee, and has given much of her time, talents and passion to PATH Intl.

A Good Reason to Renew Your PATH Intl. Center Membership Today!

PATH Intl. center members who renew before the membership grace period ends on March 31st will receive a very functional gift from PATH Intl. As you have been reading in the eNews, the PATH Intl. Standards for Certification and Accreditation (fondly known as the Standards Manual) is in the process of being completely reorganized for user-friendliness and to reflect the changes, growth and progress made in the field of equine-assisted activities and therapies.

Want to get your center's policies and procedures reorganized in keeping with the updated Standards Manual to be published in July? For all centers renewing before March 31, a new tabbed file folder system will be part of the center's renewal package. In July, the 2012 edition of the PATH Intl. Standards for Certification and Accreditation CD will be mailed and available online. Standards will be available electronically in a one-standard-per-page format to make it easier to reorganize with the change.

PATH Intl. Center Member renewals are past due. Centers that have not yet renewed have until March 31st to renew before membership expires. See below for information on how to renew.

PATH Intl. Center Renewals

As a reminder, center renewals were due December 31. Centers renewing between now and March 31, 2012 must include a $50 late fee with their center renewal. The 90-day membership renewal grace period began on January 1, 2012. If you have already renewed your center membership, thank you.

Premier Accredited Centers: please note the new Accreditation Reinstatement Policy for PACs
who do not renew prior to March 31, 2012.

Click here to renew online. NOTE: The center's primary contact or executive director must be logged in to their personal account in order to renew online.

A hard copy renewal is still an option. Download and complete the center renewal booklet and renewal invoice from the PATH Intl. website, and mail it in.

Click here to download the center renewal booklet.

Centers that prefer to pay by check may now complete the center renewal booklet online and mail a check for center membership dues.

Click here for instructions on renewing your center membership online.

Reminder: Send in Your Instructor Report

If you are renewing your center membership online, be sure to send in your instructor report. The membership department has received many online renewals but only a handful of instructor reports. Your center will be considered non-compliant if the instructor report is not received.

PATH Intl.  and PATH Intl. Centers Featured in the News

Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center, a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center in Chagrin Falls, OH, and Gaitway High School were featured on the Channel 3 News February 7. Click here to watch the clip.

The American Quarter Horse Foundation Quarterly featured PATH Intl. on the front page of its first quarter issue in the article "American Quarter Horses Honored by PATH International." Five out of the 11 regional winners for 2011 PATH Intl. Equine of the Year were American Quarter Horses. According to the article, "American Quarter Horses in PATH programs have touched the hearts and minds of not just the disabled, but the trainers, family members and volunteers as well." We thank AQHA for its continued support and sponsorship of PATH Intl.

PATH Intl. Equine Specialist Certification Subcommittee Seeks Members

Click here to read the subcommittee description and requirements.

To express your interest in this opportunity to serve PATH Intl. and the field of therapeutic riding and mental health, submit a letter or email of interest and a resume to PATH Intl., Attn: Tara McChesney. The submission deadline is March 14, 2012.

Announcing PATH Intl. Webinars

The next webinar is "Steps to Successful Accreditation" on Monday, April 16 at 5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time). To register, log in to the PATH Intl. online store. Space is limited to the first 15 registrants.

Standards Reorganization

In August 2011 a task force was formed to review the current organization of the PATH Intl. Standards for Certification and Accreditation manual. In the course of the review, it is evident that due to increased activities and certifications and yearly additions to the Standards Manual the time has come for a reorganization of the content. While the content remains the same, the intent is to eliminate duplications and create a much more user friendly manual with the publication of the 2012 edition. Click here for more details.

A Few Do's and Don'ts of Social Networking Etiquette

There are a lot of articles on the web about social networking etiquette. (By the way, we've posted a few guidelines about PATH Intl. Community Connections on the website.) It can be tricky knowing what is okay to post and what might be better left off your page or someone else's.

facebook logoHere are just a few Dos and Don'ts for those who use Facebook.

Do:

  • Send a personal message about private matters rather than posting it on someone's wall. Common courtesy also dictates that some information be given through a phone call.
  • Be mindful about what you post. Remember, the status update denigrating a business today might be a future employer or reference tomorrow.
  • Be careful of your tone. Remember that on social networks, body language (which accounts for a good deal of communication) is lost.

Don't:

  • Vent about your work. Even with stringent privacy settings, there is always a risk that someone will see your post that you didn't intend. Just remember that what you post can be seen by many different people, organizations and businesses as well as friends.
  • Overshare. Your friends don't really want to know what you are doing every 10 minutes.

One more Do:

Like us on Facebook.
