|

Thanks to all those who participated in this memorable,
fun and incredible experience.
The PATH Intl. Community Building Work Group is made up of
Tanya (Welsch) Bailey, Laura Brinckerhoff, Jen Donahue,
Karen Kersting, Shannon Knapp, Kali Welch and PATH Intl.
acting staff member, Leif Hallberg. Our goal was to develop
and support a strategy for member-centric communities. A
member-centric organization is one in which the leadership
creates a shared vision and members are actively involved in
building more member value. It is a culture that is
collaborative and supportive, with goals set that integrate
the members' goals as well as those of the organization.
Our work group supported this process and developed the
Community Connections name and the vision of "For Members By
Members," contributed bi-monthly articles to PATH Intl.
eNews, developed a comprehensive handbook and FAQ document
(both are available on the
PATH Intl. Communities Connection webpage), and
coordinated the PATH Intl. Community Connections roll-out,
which included an information booth and the PATH Intl.
Community Connections event at the conference.
The next step is yours. Please go to the

communities that interest you OR start one. The application

PATH Intl. Center Renewal Due December 31 |
|
Thank you for your commitment to safety, ethical practices and
professionalism in equine-assisted activities and therapies.
To ensure that PATH Intl. continues to provide your center
with premium education and to maintain uninterrupted access to
the wealth of benefits available to PATH Intl. centers, please
renew your center membership by December 31.
Online center renewal is now available. Online registration
makes it especially easy to renew your registration before it
expires. With the elimination of paper, you'll end any worry
about losing your form on the desk or in the mail.

contact or executive director must be logged in to their
personal account in order to renew online.
If you need to update the primary contact for your center,
please send in a
center change notification form or a premier accredited center
change notification form.
Of course if you prefer to send in a hard copy renewal, that

booklet and renewal invoice from the PATH Intl. website, and
mail it in.

Save the Date - Region 6 Conference |

Save the date for the Region 6 conference March 9-11, 2012, in
sunny Fargo, ND! This year's conference is hosted by Riding on
Angels' Wings Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center, Felton, MN,
Serenity Therapeutic Equine Program, Minot, ND, and North
Dakota State University, Fargo. We have an exciting speaker
line-up with presentations on relevant industry topics so
please mark your calendars now. More information and

Congratulations to Green Chimneys! |

 On
November 17, Green Chimneys, a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited
Center, proudly accepted the Henry Bergh Award at the 2011
ASPCA Humane Awards, held at The Pierre Hotel in New York
City. On hand to celebrate and accept the award were (from
left to right) Joe Whalen, Miyako Kinoshita, Myra Ross, Dr.
Samuel B. Ross and Michael Kaufmann.
The annual ASPCA event recognizes the important role animals
play in our lives, the significance of the human-animal bond
and the people who make animal welfare an integral part of
their lives. The Henry Bergh Award honors those who have
followed in the footsteps of ASPCA founder Henry Bergh,
demonstrating a commitment to the care and well-being of
animals. |

The PATH Intl. Equine Specialist Certification
Subcommittee seeks two enthusiastic new members to join
the committee. Applicants should have a strong interest in
therapeutic riding, EFL and EFP, desire to continue the
development of and improve the equine specialist certification.

Standards Reorganization Project |
|
|
In August 2011 a task force was created to review the current
organization of the PATH Intl. Standards for Certification and
Accreditation manual. In the course of the review it was evident
that due to increased activities and certifications and yearly
additions to the Standards Manual the time had come for a
reorganization of the content. While the content remains the same,
the intent is to eliminate duplications and create a much more
user friendly manual with the publication of the 2012 edition.

Equine Tips From the Equine Welfare Committee |
|
|
PATH Intl. Core Standard P9 refers to your center's equine
first-aid container. Please see below to reference the standard
and then read further tips and suggestions from the Equine Welfare
Committee.
Does the center have a readily available equine first aid
container at each activity site that is:
1. In clearly marked containers?
2. Routinely checked and restocked with written evidence of
maintenance?
3. Placed in a designated location, accessible to center personnel
at all activity sites?
4. Contains emergency numbers: veterinarian, personnel related to
equine care, farrier, equine owner?
5. Includes at least these items:
a. Horse thermometer
b. Topical antibiotic
c. Antiseptic cleaner
d. Wound bandaging materials
Interpretation: First aid container may be a kit, box, cabinet,
trunk, closet, etc. Emergency numbers should be placed inside the
container. Suggested equine first aid items are described in the
Guidelines Section.
What's in Your Equine Emergency Kit?

With the New Year almost upon us, now is a good time to peek into
your emergency kit and renew your resources or, if you don't have
an emergency kit, now is a great time to start one. No one wants
to think about their horse having an accident or illness that
needs emergency care, but in the event it does happen, you want to
be as prepared as possible. Having a first aid kit that is
well-stocked and easily accessible can ease your stress during a
horse emergency.
In addition to a well-stocked emergency kit, you should know what
your horse's normal temperature, pulse (heart) and respiration
rates are and how to take them. If you don't know what they should
be and how to take them, ask your veterinarian. Keep this
information pertaining to your individual horse(s) in your
emergency kit. If you're not comfortable with cleaning wounds and
applying bandages, you can ask your veterinarian to show you how
to perform these procedures then review the techniques so you're
ready when it counts and until the veterinarian arrives.
Here's an example of a well-stocked equine emergency kit:
Thermometer (digital, rectal type with string attached)
Lubricant like KY Jelly, mineral oil or Vaseline for the rectal
thermometer
Stethoscope
Flexible wrap like Vet wrap or Co-flex
Diapers/sanitary napkins (for soaking an abscess or to help stop
bleeding)
Antiseptic wound cleaner like Iodine or Betadine
Antibiotic ointment (triple antibiotic, Neosporin or bacitracin)
Isopropyl (Rubbing) Alcohol (for sterilizing)
Clean wash cloths and bath towel
Metal bowl
Latex gloves
Scissors (sharp and with a blunt end for cutting bandages)
Epsom salt
Stable and polo wraps
Sheet or rolled cotton to use under stable wraps*
Contact bandage*
Gauze pads (assorted sizes)*
Cling wrap*
Duct tape
Single use ice packs
Electrolytes
Hoof pick
Flashlight with extra batteries
Pliers (to pull nails)
6" diameter PVC tubing (cut in half the long way into lengths of
1 � to 2' for splinting)
Notepad with pen to keep track of vitals and/or notes for vet
List of emergency phone numbers
List of normal vital signs (temperature, respiratory and heart
rates)
Dates that each item was added to the kit and/or expiration
dates
*Materials should be sterile
An emergency kit can be simple or very elaborate, but your kit
should suit your environment and the type of work you do with your
horse(s). Other resources for what you may need are your
veterinarian, local horse council or other recognized horse
organizations and fellow horse owners in your area.

Consider Hosting a PATH Intl. Event |

We hope that 2012 will be full of exciting events at PATH Intl.
Centers! Click here to download the

the intent to host packets for details concerning hosting an
event. We want to add more driving workshops on the west coast,
ESMHL workshops and skills tests and vaulting workshops/
certifications to our 2012 calendar, so please consider hosting an
event.

Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) Recap |
|
PATH Intl. has received questions regarding the Equine
Specialist in Mental Health and Learning certification (ESMHL).
The following is intended to explain elements of this
certification.
PATH Intl. currently offers the ESMHL to certify the
equine specialist in an un-mounted equine facilitated
psychotherapy (EFP) or equine facilitated learning (EFL)
session. PATH Intl. Standards require this certification
for all centers and instructors that participate in EFP.
Effective July 2011 a two year grace period is in effect
for those offering EFP to obtain this certification. The
ESMHL certification is not currently required for those
participating in EFL. To assist PATH Intl. instructors
participating in EFP sessions to obtain this required
certification the Certified Instructor option is available
through December 31st, 2011 (see information below.)
The focus and intent of the ESMHL workshop and
certification is distinct from other PATH Intl. instructor
workshops. This certification enables centers offering
un-mounted EFP and or EFL activities to meet standard P20.
The presence of a riding instructor is not required for
un-mounted EFP or EFL session; an ESMHL can conduct a
session. A mental health therapist must be present during
EFP sessions. For all mounted or driving sessions an
appropriately certified PATH Intl. instructor is required.
This certification is offered to all PATH Intl. members.
No other certification is required prior to gaining Equine
Specialist in Mental Health and Learning certification.
The Certified Instructor Option enables a
current instructor that is participating in EFP or EFL to
waive the workshop and skills test, saving time and money.
Instructors turn in a completed portfolio to the PATH
Intl. office by December 31, 2011. When the portfolio has
been processed (allow up to ten business days) you will
receive an email to access the online ESMHL test as well
as the CAT test unless you have taken it in the last year.
Submitted portfolios are good for one year. If an
applicant has not completed the certification process
within one year of submitting the portfolio he/she must
start the certification process over.
Who this affects:
* Any member opening a PATH Intl. center offering an
un-mounted EFP program
* Any PATH Intl. instructor participating in EFP as an
equine specialist
* Any PATH Intl. center that offers an EFP program
