Local Company Donates "Green" Asphalt
Green asphalt at Special EquestriansNews From Special Equestrians
APAC Mid-South - along with one of its partners, Alabama Bridge Builders - donated the asphalt, labor and equipment for the project, providing 300 tons of green asphalt leading up to Special Equestrians, a NARHA Premier Accredited Center, located on the campus of Indian Springs School just south of Birmingham, Alabama.

APAC Mid-South CFO, David South, has a special connection with Special Equestrians; his 12-year-old daughter has ridden in the program since 2005. Active in Special Equestrian events, South, along with Tim Mullendore, also of APAC, and Casey Mims of Alabama Bridge Builders - has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

Traditional asphalt is made by cementing rock and sand particles with a gooey byproduct of crude oil production that must be heated to extremely high temperatures to be applied to roads and other surfaces, a process that creates greenhouse gas emissions. Green asphalt incorporates a large percentage of recycled asphalt that is broken into small bits and mixed with water and soap-like chemicals called surfactants. This kind of asphalt can be laid at much lower temperatures, which - combined with the recycled nature of the product - lessens the impact on the environment. This technology is new to the Birmingham area, having only been used in APAC Mid-South projects over the past few months, according to South.
A paved road will make a world of difference at Special Equestrians, where dust from the dirt road is a significant problem most of the year.
